What is a Makerspace?
Ajax Public Library's Makerspace is a collaborative workspace for all customers to create, invent, and learn! Discover a variety of tools, equipment, and software to bring your ideas to life or build new skills!
When is the Makerspace open?
The Makerspace is open whenever the Library is open! Occasionally, the Makerspace may be temporarily closed to public access to facilitate a program or workshop. Please note that we ask all Makerspace projects be completely wrapped up (saved, finished, and machine clean-up complete!) in time for closing (approximately 30 minutes before Library closing).
How do I use the Makerspace?
The first time you visit the Makerspace, show Makerspace staff your Ajax Public Library card and complete the Makerspace Waiver. From there, access to equipment may vary - some equipment requires staff assistance to operate, but other equipment you are welcome to use independently.
Is there a cost to use the Makerspace?
There is no fee to use Makerspace equipment or be a Library customer! However, there may be a cost associated with some equipment and projects that require consumable/non-reusable materials (ex. thread, fabric, filament, or vinyl). For more information on costs, see the Makerspace Price List.
How old do you have to be to use the Makerspace?
Customers 14 years of age and older can use the Makerspace independently. Children under the age of 14 may use the Makerspace under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian, who must sign the Makerspace Waiver and remain with the child in the Makerspace at all times.
Can I use my own materials?
There are some materials that must be specific brands or formats to work with Makerspace equipment (and the Library offers these to customers for a small fee). But in many cases, yes, you are welcome to bring your own materials for use in the Makerspace. It's always best to check with Makerspace staff in advance of beginning a project.
